Freshman First 40 — Day 19

DAY 19

Phil 2:1-2

The community of Philippi in the Bible serves as an example of how we as believers should live in community. The single characteristic that drives these relationships is humility. Put the interests of others above your own. Having this attitude makes you more like Jesus, an obedient servant to the fullest human extent. Being in college is quite possibly the most difficult place to practice this trait. Suddenly it seems, everything becomes about you – what classes are you going to take, where do you want to live, who
are you going to hang out with, what activities do you want to participate in, what are you going to do with your life? It can be overwhelming to deal with those life questions on your own, let alone try to think about the people in your life more than yourself. I find that my defining moments happen when I am focused on someone else or working towards the accomplishment of something bigger than me. For me, finding ways to intentionally serve others helps with this. I find that I come away with a greater knowledge of the God I serve and a perspective that is more like His, the way He sees things. When your mind is focused on what is right and true and pure, the community you are a part of will benefit in great ways- and so will you.

“ If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any
comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, then make my
joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one
in spirit and purpose.” (Philippians 2:1-2)
